Viking Gate Motor Replacement: The Wylie Owner’s Guide

A Viking gate motor replacement in Wylie typically runs $950 to $2,400 installed, depending on which Viking model sits on your property and whether we’re swapping the arm, the control board, or the entire operator. We stock Viking-compatible parts on our trucks and can usually have your gate working again the same day we arrive. Most Wylie homeowners call us after the gate starts groaning on open, moves in slow motion, or simply stops responding to the remote.

The most common story we hear goes something like this: the gate worked fine for years, then one morning it opened halfway and quit. Or it started beeping from the control box. Or the arm sagged and scraped against the driveway. By the time someone calls, the motor has usually been failing for weeks. A Viking operator does not typically die without warning. It gives signs, and we’ll walk you through those below.

Which Viking Models This Applies To

Viking has made several operator lines over the years, and the replacement part depends on which one you have. The big three we see in Wylie driveways are the Viking R-6, the Viking X-9, and the older Viking G-5 series. The R-6 is the workhorse, a residential swing arm operator that pivots on a clevis pin and mounts to the gate post with a heavy steel bracket. The X-9 is the linear arm version, often found on longer driveways with heavier gates. The G-5 was the budget line, and frankly, most G-5 failures we see are not worth rebuilding. The operator lasted as long as it was going to last.

Your model number is on a silver or white sticker inside the control box cover. If the sticker is faded or gone, Victor Salinas can usually identify the unit by the arm geometry, the board layout, and the motor housing shape. Viking parts are not as interchangeable across series as some brands, and this is the single biggest compatibility gotcha we run into. An R-6 arm will not bolt onto an X-9 carriage without a modification kit, and even then, the limit switch travel is wrong. We recommend OEM Viking parts for the mechanical arm assembly and a quality aftermarket equivalent for the control board, where the spec match is straightforward and the savings are real.

Signs Your Viking Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • The gate groans or labors on open. This is usually the internal gear train wearing down or the arm bushings binding. In Wylie’s heat, the factory grease inside a Viking operator turns to varnish after about eight years, and the motor starts working twice as hard to move the same weight.
  • The arm sags or scrapes the driveway. The clevis pin or the arm pivot bushing has wallowed out. What began as a quarter-inch of play at the hinge is now six inches of droop at the far end of the arm. The motor is fighting a geometry problem it was never designed to win.
  • The control board clicks but the motor does not turn. This is the classic capacitor failure on Viking units. The board sends the signal, the capacitor tries to fire the start winding, and nothing happens. A new capacitor fixes some of these; a burned motor winding does not.
  • The gate opens halfway and reverses. Viking operators use an internal obstruction sensor that reads motor amperage draw. As the gear train wears, the motor pulls more amps, the board misreads it as an obstruction, and the gate gives up mid-cycle. You might reset it twelve times a day and get the same result.
  • The remote range drops to almost nothing. The receiver board inside the Viking control box has a small antenna wire that corrodes over time, especially in humid months. Before the receiver dies entirely, the range shrinks until you’re holding the clicker against the keypad.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For Wylie homes, a Viking gate motor replacement breaks down like this:

  • Arm assembly replacement: $950 to $1,400 installed, including the new arm, pivot hardware, and travel adjustment. This is the most common fix when the gear train is sound but the arm is worn.
  • Control board and receiver replacement: $650 to $950 installed. This includes the board, capacitor, antenna, and reprogramming your existing remotes.
  • Full operator replacement: $1,700 to $2,400 installed, depending on gate weight and whether we also replace the mounting post bracket. This is the route when both the motor and the arm are spent.

The price you get is the price you pay. We quote everything before a single bolt is turned, parts and labor together, and we do not come back at the end with a surprise line item. Every installation is covered by our written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it is not right, we come back and make it right. No paperwork, no arguing.

DIY or Call Us?

There are a few things you can check before calling: make sure the circuit breaker for the gate is not tripped, confirm the control box has power, and look at the arm to see if the pin has walked out. Those are safe, simple checks. What we do not recommend is opening the control box and probing wires. A Viking operator runs on 115V or 230V line voltage, and the capacitor holds a charge even after the breaker is off. This is the part of the job where a homeowner gets hurt, and no repair is worth that.

Beyond the electrical hazard, there is the calibration problem. A Viking arm has to be set for travel limits, force sensitivity, and open-close dwell time. Miss one setting and the gate slams into the post or pushes through the stop. We have fixed enough DIY Viking replacements to say plainly: this is not a light-swap project. If you’re in Wylie and the gate is down, call us at (432) 249-5492. We will give you a straight answer before we give you a price.
