FAAC Keypad & Intercom Repair: The Wylie Owner’s Guide

Before you order any part online, check the label on the inside of the keypad housing. FAAC stamps a model number and a voltage rating, usually 12V or 24V DC. Wiring a 24V keypad into a 12V board, or the other way around, will let the smoke out in about thirty seconds. That mismatch is the number one reason we see brand-new keypads dead on arrival in Wylie. On FAAC specifically, stick with the OEM membrane and board whenever the keypad is less than ten years old. The aftermarket membranes are thinner and they fail fast in Texas sun. Signs Your FAAC Keypad or Intercom Is Failing

• Buttons need a hard press to register. The carbon contacts under the membrane have worn down or the membrane itself has micro-cracks from UV exposure. This is the most common FAAC keypad failure in Wylie, and it gets worse fast once it starts.
• The keypad beeps but the gate doesn’t move. That tells us the keypad is sending a signal, but the relay output isn’t closing. Usually a burned relay on the keypad board or a broken wire between the keypad and the opener’s open/close terminals.
• Intermittent operation, worse after rain. Moisture is getting into the housing through a cracked gasket or a loose conduit fitting. Wylie’s humid spring mornings will expose this every time. The fix is a new gasket and weather sealing, not just drying it out.
• The intercom rings but no sound, or sound only one way. The speaker cone has dried out and split, or the audio board has a cold solder joint. FAAC intercoms mounted on unshaded pillars cook in the Wylie heat and the paper cones fail first.
• Some buttons work, others don’t. Individual switch contacts have failed. The membrane is at end of life. Replacement is the fix, not cleaning. Once one contact goes, the rest follow within months.

DIY or Call Us?

There are two things an owner can safely check before calling. First, confirm the keypad has power. On FAAC units, a dead keypad sometimes means a tripped GFCI outlet in the garage or a blown low-voltage fuse on the opener board. Second, check the wiring at the keypad for obvious corrosion or a loose terminal. If the wire nuts are corroded green, that’s a real finding we need to know about.

What I would not do is open the keypad housing and start probing with a multimeter unless you’re comfortable with low-voltage DC circuits and you know exactly which terminals carry power. The bigger risk is miswiring the thing on reassembly, which can fry a $300 board. And if the keypad is tied into an intercom with a gate-release relay, one crossed wire can send 12V where it shouldn’t go.
