FAAC Gate Motor Replacement: The Wylie Owner’s Guide

FAAC gate motor replacement in Wylie typically runs $750 to $1,400 installed, depending on the model series and whether you need a full operator swap or just the motor assembly. We stock FAAC replacement motors and compatible aftermarket equivalents on our trucks for the most common residential series, and most replacements are completed in a single visit. The way most Wylie homeowners discover the motor has failed is simple: the gate starts moving slower than it used to, then one morning it doesn’t move at all, or it hums without going anywhere.

We’re an independent gate company, not affiliated with FAAC directly, but we’ve been installing and replacing their operators across Collin County long enough to know exactly what fails, what fits, and what doesn’t.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To

The FAAC lineup we see most often on Wylie driveways splits into two families: the 400-series swing gate operators (412, 415, 422) and the older 740/750 hydraulic series that were popular in the 2000s. Each uses a different motor assembly, and they are not interchangeable. A 415 motor will not bolt into a 412 housing without modifying the mounting plate, and the 740 series is a completely different animal with hydraulic fluid, not a direct-drive motor.

Here’s what matters for a correct match. First, look for the model tag on the operator housing itself, not the control board. The board tells you the control revision; the operator housing tells you the mechanical series. Second, FAAC motors are identified by voltage: 115V for most North American residential installs, but older import units and some estate gates run 220V. Wiring a 115V motor into a 220V system is a fast way to burn it out in a week. Third, you’ll face the OEM-vs-aftermarket decision. FAAC OEM motors carry a premium price, but we stock quality aftermarket equivalents for the 400-series that match the original torque specs and mounting pattern at roughly 30-40% less. We’ll tell you straight: for the 412 and 415, the aftermarket motor is a solid choice. For the 740 hydraulic series, stay OEM. The aftermarket hydraulic pumps we’ve tested don’t hold up in Texas heat.

Signs Your FAAC Gate Motor Is Failing

  • Gate moves noticeably slower than it did six months ago. The motor’s windings or the capacitor is degrading. On 400-series units, this usually means the run capacitor is on its way out, which is a $40 part that can buy you another year or two. On hydraulic units, slow movement points to low fluid or a tired pump.
  • Motor hums but the gate doesn’t move. The capacitor has failed completely or the motor is seized. If it’s the capacitor, you’re in luck. If it’s seized, it’s a full motor replacement, not a repair.
  • You hear a grinding or whining sound from the operator housing. Internal bearings or gears are worn. Once the bearings go, the motor shaft starts to wobble and the whole assembly eats itself. Running it longer only makes the replacement more expensive.
  • The gate stops halfway and reverses, or stops and resets. This is often the motor overheating and tripping the thermal protector. In Wylie’s summer heat, a motor with failing windings will trip more often because it’s running hotter than it should.
  • Burnt electrical smell near the operator after use. The motor windings are overheating. Stop using the gate, cut power at the breaker, and call us. This is not something that gets better with a reset.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Typical Installed Price in Wylie
FAAC 412/415 motor replacement (aftermarket motor) $750 - $950
FAAC 412/415 motor replacement (OEM motor) $1,050 - $1,250
FAAC 740/750 hydraulic pump & motor assembly $1,200 - $1,400
Capacitor replacement (if motor is salvageable) $120 - $180
Full operator swap (new complete FAAC-compatible unit) $1,400 - $1,900

The price we quote you before any work starts is the price you pay. That includes the part, labor, removal of the old motor, testing, and adjustment of the gate’s travel limits and force settings so the new motor isn’t fighting the gate from day one. What drives the spread is your specific model, whether you choose OEM or aftermarket, and whether the gate itself is out of adjustment, which we’ll correct as part of the job. Every replacement is covered by our written 90-Day Done Right Promise. If it’s not right, we come back and make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s one thing you can safely check yourself: the breaker. A FAAC operator on a dedicated 20-amp circuit that trips means something pulled too much current, which points back to the motor. Beyond that, we recommend leaving motor replacement to a trained technician. The 400-series motor swap involves 115V or 220V wiring inside the operator housing, plus re-tensioning the gate’s travel stops and force settings so the new motor isn’t overloaded on a heavy gate. Get the wiring wrong and you’re risking a short inside the housing. Get the limit settings wrong and the gate will slam open or closed. Neither is worth saving a few hundred dollars.

If you’re in Wylie and your FAAC operator is acting up, call (432) 249-5492. We’ll ask what it’s doing, give you a straight answer on what it likely needs, and schedule a visit. Tell me what it’s doing wrong, and I’ll tell you what it actually needs.
